Land Flatworms (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida) in Remnants of Deciduous Forest in the Northeast Region Of Southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Amaral,Silvana Vargas do; Hack,Ilana Rossi; Iturralde,Giuly Gouvêa; Leal-Zanchet,Ana Maria.
Land flatworms show high endemism due to their restricted mobility. In southern Brazil, land flatworm communities have been found mainly in areas of ombrophilous forests. Thus, this study documents land planarian species composition in remnants of deciduous seasonal forest in the northeast region of southern Brazil. Direct, diurnal samplings reveal the occurrence of 26 species of land flatworms, of which one belongs to the subfamily Rhynchodeminae and the others to the subfamily Geoplaninae. The Rhynchodeminae genus Rhynchodemus Leidy 1851 and the following Geoplaninae genera occurred: CephaloflexaCarbayo & Leal-Zanchet, 2003, Choeradoplana Graff, 1896, Imbira Carbayo et al., 2013, IssocaFroehlich, 1955, LuteostriataCarbayo, 2010, Obama Carbayo et al.,...

Estrategias de vida de los copépodos Drepanopus forcipatus y Calanus australis en relación con los recursos tróficos en la plataforma patagónica austral (Argentina, 47°- 55°S) OceanDocs
Antacli, J.C..
This Thesis contributes to elucidate the life cycle strategies of two copepod species, the medium-size clausocalanid Drepanopus forcipatus Giesbrecht, 1888 and the large calanid Calanus australis Brodsky, 1959, in relation to the environmental conditions in the southern Patagonian shelf (47°-55°S). This research was mainly carried out with samples collected in late summer/early autumn (March/April, 2004) onboard RV "Dr. E. L. Holmberg" (INIDEP, Mar del Plata). An additional sampling performed during early spring (October, 2005) with RV "Puerto Deseado" (CONICET) was also utilized. The present study was based on the following research questions: 1) Which is the available food for copepod populations by late summer? 2) Which is the relative contribution of...

Brachyuran crab community structure and associated sediment reworking activities in pioneer and young mangroves of French Guiana, South America ArchiMer
Aschenbroich, Adelaide; Michaud, Emma; Stieglitz, Thomas; Fromard, Francois; Gardel, Antoine; Tavares, Marcos; Thouzeau, Gerard.
This study in French Guiana evaluates the changes of crab assemblages and their bioturbation activities between mangrove early stages (pioneer and young mangrove) and within stages by taking their spatial heterogeneity (tidal channels, flat areas, pools) into account. The results show differences in crab assemblage structure between and within the early stages of mangrove in relation to microhabitat and sediment characteristics. The sediment reworking rates are a function of the biomass or density of particular species (Ucides cordatus, Uca cumulanta) and burrower functional groups. Crab species or functional interaction mediate changes in sediment reworking rates suggesting the need to consider entire benthic communities rather than single species. This...

The Seasonal and Inter-Annual Fluctuations of Plankton Abundance and Community Structure in a North Atlantic Marine Protected Area ArchiMer
Benedetti, Fabio; Jalabert, Laëtitia; Sourisseau, Marc; Becker, Beatriz; Cailliau, Caroline; Desnos, Corinne; Elineau, Amanda; Irisson, Jean-olivier; Lombard, Fabien; Picheral, Marc; Stemmann, Lars; Pouline, Patrick.
Marine Protected Areas have become a major tool for the conservation of marine biodiversity and resources. Yet our understanding of their efficacy is often limited because it is measured for a few biological components, typically top predators or species of commercial interest. To achieve conservation targets, marine protected areas can benefit from ecosystem-based approaches. Within such an approach, documenting the variation of plankton indicators and their covariation with climate is crucial as plankton represent the base of the food webs. With this perspective, we sought to document the variations in the emerging properties of the plankton to better understand the dynamics of the pelagic fishes, mammals and seabirds that inhabit the region. For the...

Early postlarval fish in the hyperbenthos of the Dutch Delta (south-west Netherlands) OMA
Beyst, B.; Mees, J.; Cattrijsse, A..
Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37...

Determination of seasonal phytoplankton communities, based on quantitative data using a mathematical analysis OMA
Caljon, A..
The definition of algal communities has always been a very discussed subject. We applied a principal component analysis on quantitative phytoplankton data. This ordination technique made it possible to distinguish the algal groups present. This technique is very often applied in the phytosociology of higher plants but less frequently in the phytosociology of algae. Till now this ordination has been used in phycology, merely for marine- and freshwater benthic algae, e.g. the benthic diatoms of rivers (Descy 1976a, b).

Community composition and species richness of parasitoids infesting Yponomeuta species in the Netherlands Naturalis
Cleary, Daniel F.R..
Parasitoid assemblages infesting Yponomeuta species in the Netherlands were investigated. Parasitoid species richness and community composition were related to host species, habitat, temporal and spatial variation. Both community structure and species richness did not differ among habitats. There was no significant difference in species richness between years (1994 and 1995) but there was a significant difference in community composition. Community composition and species richness both differed among host species, although this latter result was solely due to the host species Y. evonymellus. There was no significant relationship between community similarity and distance. These results indicate that the parasitoids of the moth genus Yponomeuta in the...

Invasive wild boars and native mammals in agroecosystems in the Atlantic Forest of Western Brazil PAB
Doutel-Ribas,Cynthia; Martins,Fernando Ibanez; Campos,Zilca; Piovezan,Ubiratan; Tomas,Walfrido; Silva,Virgínia Santiago; Pellegrin,Aiesca; Mourão,Guilherme.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate an index of the relative biomass per species, in a medium to large-sized mammal community, as well as to determine how the introduced wild boar (Sus scrofa) fits into this index, and to verify if the occupancy of sites by domestic dogs interferes with those of wild boars and how much the periods of dogs’ activity overlap those of wild boars. The biomass/effort index was measured for each native mammal species and for the introduced wild boar, in two surveyed farms in Brazil’s Western Atlantic Forest range, through the use of camera trappings that were also used to verify if dogs and wild boar overlap in space and activity time. Wild boars seem to dominate the community, just a few years after their...

Patrón espacial y temporal de las áreas de asociaciones ícticas demersales costeras (34°S-41°S) y su relación con los factores ambientales. OceanDocs
Jaureguizar, A.J..
The spatial and temporal changes of the fish assemblage areas composition at the coastal ecosystem of the western South Atlantic (34 degree -41 degree S) during six springs (1981, 1983, 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999), were examined. For each assemblage area the most common species and those species that discriminate it from adjacent assemblages areas within years, were identified. Within each area, also resident (common in all years) and facultative (contributing to less than 90% of similarity within any year) species, were studied. Also were identified what parameters control the main structuring of the fish community on the spatial and temporal patterns. In order to determine how the environmental factors influenced the fish community structure, the...

The problems of application of radiocarbon method for estimation of primary production in oligotrophic waters ArchiMer
Krupatkina, D; Berland, B; Maestrini, S.
The errors in primary production estimation by the radiocarbon method may differ from one trophic region to another. Such supposition is based on unequal phytoplanktonic structural characteristics of these regions. These errors are likely to appear rather significant in oligotrophic waters predominated by nano- and ultranano-plankton (the so-called picoplankton). The organic substance of oligotrophic waters is obviously produced by picoplankton for the most part, the need for clarifying possible errors when estimating primary production by the radiocarbon method, which is the purpose of the present work is urgent. For these topics in oligotrophic waters, measurements were carried out in two ways: (1) according to the generally accepted pattern (Sorokin,...

The Arctic Ocean is particularly affected by climate change, with changes in sea ice cover expected to impact phytoplankton primary production. During the Green Edge expedition, the development of the late spring-early summer diatom bloom was studied in relation with the sea ice retreat by multiple transects across the marginal ice zone. Biogenic silica concentrations and uptake rates were measured. In addition, diatom assemblage structures and their associated carbon biomass were determined, along with taxon-specific contributions to total biogenic silica production using the fluorescent dye PDMPO. Results indicate that a diatom bloom developed in open waters close to the ice edge, following the alleviation of light limitation, and extended 20-30 km...

Cambio temporal en la estructura de la comunidad coralina del área de Santa Marta - Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona (Caribe colombiano) OceanDocs
Martínez, S.; Acosta, A..
Several predictions have been made, about magnitude and direction of temporal changes in the coral community structure, during the last decade. However, few studies have demonstrated it quantitatively. In order to document such changes, the coral community structure was studied in four continental reefs in the Colombian Caribbean, two in the Santa Marta region: Punta Betín (PB) and Morro Grande Island (MO), and two in the Tayrona National Natural Park (PNNT): Granate cove (GR) and Gayraca bay (GA). Coral composition and cover were quantified in 2002 and compared to base line studies from 1989 (PB, MO & GR) and from 1992 (GA). These variables were quantified by 20 m linear transects between 1.5 m and 29 m depth. After a decade, all reefs lost in average...

The effect of water Hyacinth, Eichhornia Crassipes, infestation on phytoplankton productivity in Lake Naivasha and the status of control OceanDocs
Mironga, John Momanyi.
The paper presents data collected in an assessment of effects of water hyacinth infestation on phytoplankton productivity in Lake Naivasha, Kenya. A summary of the status of control and strategies for the future is given. The ecological effects of water hyacinth, Eichhornia Crassipes, on Lake Naivasha have received little attention compared to the large body of work available on the weed’s socioeconomic impact on the country’s water ways and methods for its removal. This study was conducted to determine if water hyacinth infestation in Lake Naivasha affects phytoplankton productivity. Several sampling stations were set up in the lake at sites where the floating mats of the weed were present and sites where the weed was absent. Phytoplankton chlorophyll-a...
